PowerKnowledge is a 3 series database; each covering a different branch of science- Earth/Space, Life Science, and Physical Science. The vast majority of the elementary school science curriculum can be located within one of the three databases, with supporting information for a well developed understanding of each topic and its related elements.
For demonstration, we will use Mars as our topic of interest. Mars could be typed into the search bar or likely located within the "Space" icon on the side bar menu of topics.
On the left are the options when selecting "Space" from the side bar menu. A topic of "Mars" will fall in both of the sub-menus listed: Space and Solar System and Planets.
Below are the result from using the search bar. Notice "Mars" returned 21 related links. The first being an article specifically about Mars and others highlight the context in which Mars can be related to the articles.
When selecting the 1st article "Mars", you land on the main entry screen (below). This screen has several features that make PK a benefit to students who are both researchers and curiosity seekers. Notice the following:
- Short introductory video
- Article read aloud option
- Prepared citations in MLA and APA
- Quick icons for print, email and citation options
- Sections with specific relation to the study of Mars, offering a broad base of knowledge and understanding.
A slideshow review of the "Sections" side bar menu offerings can be found below. PowerKnowledge offers a deep well of information related to the primary topic. Each page is a short, single screen, helping to keep information concise and organized to younger students.
Each of the three PowerKnowledge databases offers additional resources for both students and teachers.
Games for each branch of science covered are offered for students to play, enjoy and reinforce concepts.
Live video feeds are offered to a variety of interesting locations, each relative to the branch of science it is offered under.
Two exciting options are shown below:
- Glacial Lagoon Webcam Iceland (left)
- International Space Station (right)
Lastly, curriculum correlations, lesson plans, reproducibles, graphic organizers, experiments and science fair suggestions are some of the additional support resources offered through PowerKnowledge, making it a valuable tool for both students and teachers.
